The Dawson Family Adventure

The Dawson family's holiday in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, starting on the 8th January 2026, sounds like a fantastic adventure!

Staying at one of the Pelican collection establishments surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park (world heritage site) easy walking access to restaurants and estuary views.

Their trip perfectly captured what draws many international visitors to this beautiful part of South Africa. 

Fishing outings on good weather days - St Lucia and the nearby iSimangaliso coast are popular for estuary, surf and deep-sea fishing, with warm currents supporting game fish and more. 

The village offers relaxed walks, hippo and crocodile sightings along the estuary especially on one of the boat cruises, and a laid-back vibe with nearby eateries. 

The full day safari to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park for six people was a highlight. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is Africa's oldest proclaimed game reserve dating back to 1895, famous for its Big Five - elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and lion and diverse wildlife like cheetah's and wild dogs. Seeing most of the Big Five, even without spotting a lion this time is still a thrill - many tours from St Lucia pick up around 5am, full catering, and guided drives. it's about a one-hour drive making it an accessible day trip. Their hearts being full of joy after the tour is so relatable - the park's landscapes and animal encounters often leave guest buzzing!

A day visit to iSimangaliso Wetlands Park rounded things out beautifully. This UNESCO listed gem combines wetlands, beaches and wildlife seamlessly. Heading to Cape Vidal for snorkelling in the protected bay is a standout activity - clear waters reveal colourful fish, moray eels, rays and sometimes turtles, all amid stunning coastal scenery with dunes and forests. Visitors often combine game viewing - zebra, buffalo, rhino en route with beach time, swimming or a braai (bbq). It's a perfect mix of safari and ocean vibes. 

Overall, the Dawsons enjoyed a well-balanced holiday blending adventure, nature and relaxation in one of South Africa's most unique spots. St Lucia is a top destination for wildlife lovers, and many Aussies make the long journey for experiences just like the Dawson family.
